An art workshop for adults, Plein Air: Pastel Painting, will take place Aug. 30 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at CHARAC Art Center, 42790 Highway 63 South, one mile south of Cable. Professional artist Diana Randolph of Drummond will be the class instructor.
“En plein air” is a French expression that means “in the open air.” It’s used by artists to describe the art of outdoor painting, capturing landscapes and views in natural light.
Participants will meet at CHARAC Art Center for an introduction to plein air, learn tips for painting outdoors, and review a pastel article for inspiration. Then, weather permitting, we’ll carpool to a nearby wildflower meadow to paint with pastels on paper. We’ll go back inside the art center for a short critique and to have the instructor mat your work if you would like to purchase a mat to fit the paper sizes on the supply list. This workshop is for those who have had some experience working with pastels (dry pastels, not oils), though it’s not required to have done any previous plein air work. If weather is severe we’ll work inside the art center using window views as inspiration.
