Local author wins award

Crystal Spring Gibbins' poetry collection NOW/HERE (Holy Cow! Press) received Honorable Mention for the Edna Meudt Poetry Book Award from the Council for Wisconsin Writers, judged by Sean Thomas Dougherty.

Crystal Spring Gibbins' poetry collection NOW/HERE (Holy Cow! Press) received Honorable Mention for the Edna Meudt Poetry Book Award from the Council for Wisconsin Writers, judged by Sean Thomas Dougherty.

The Honorable Mention award is accompanied by a cash prize and a one-week residency at the Painted Forest in Valton. Awards will be presented at the Council's annual banquet to be held this year on May 12 in Milwaukee.

Gibbins grew up on the islands of Lake of the Woods, Minnesota/Ontario and currently writes and lives on the south shore of Lake Superior. She has been the recipient of grants and fellowships from the Chequamegon Bay Arts Council, Arrowhead Regional Arts Council, and Minnesota State Arts Board. Her work has been featured widely in literary journals, such as Minnesota Review, Hayden's Ferry Review, Cincinnati Review, H_NGM_N, Verse Daily, Prairie Schooner, and elsewhere.

Crystal holds a PhD in English with concentrations in Creative Writing, 20th and 21st Century American Poetry, and Environmental Literature from the University of Nebraska. She has taught creative writing, literature, and composition for nearly 15 years at various universities and colleges in the Midwest.
