For years, the author and his neighbor silently vied for a handful of asparagus stalks that sprang up along their street in May.

The race for asparagus is over, for good. You could say I won this spring, but it’s a victory I’d rather not have.

For years I’d see “the old guy” when I passed his small place nestled behind a pine grove on a corner lot. I’d see him taking walks and looking at the plethora of wildflowers where his street — the city limits — butted up to a grassy field across from his lot.
