It was a veritable onslaught of wrestling activity on Saturday, Jan. 14 and Sunday, Jan. 15 at Ashland High School when the Ashland Wrestling Club doubled down to host both the Ashland Northland High School Invite and the 2023 Ashland Youth Wrestling tournament. Saturday featured high school teams from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Ontario Canada including
Aitkin, Rock Ridge, Thunder Bay, Lakeland, Northwestern, Superior and Ashland. Despite having five wrestlers out with injury, the Oredockers put three grapplers on the podium. Sophomore Justin Defoe (132) took second , while junior Laken Villaverde (152) also placed second and sophomore Gunnar Crow (220) took third. Two outside Bay-Area wrestlers passed 100 career wins — Craig Ashton of Aitkin, Minnesota, and Zane Grams of Lakeland — while the Northwestern Tigers won the team competition. On Sunday the thirty-third running of the Ashland Youth Wrestling tournament took place for wrestlers aged Pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. One hundred and fifty-five wrestlers participated; coming from as far as Menasha, Wausau, Chetek, and Thunder Bay.
