In keeping with the evening weather on Tuesday, Jan. 17, results were mixed among Bay-Area boys basketball teams. Bayfield (5-3 in the Indianhead Conference) continued its winning ways with a decisive 70-38 victory over the Butternut Midgets (0-12) who are still looking for their first win. Meanwhile, Washburn (7-2) topped Drummond (5-3) 65-61 at home, securing third place in conference behind unbeaten Solon Springs (8-0), now ranked No. 10 in WIAA D5, and the Hurley Northstars who with just one loss (a 79-47 beatdown at Solon Springs), easily defeated South Shore (3-6) 90-47. Meanwhile in the Heart O’ North Conference, the Ashland Oredockers (3-5) dropped a game they may regret in a 56-44 loss to the Barron Golden Bears (3-4). Struggling against the Bears space-eating 3-2 zone, the ‘Dockers could not convert enough three point shots to pull Barron, which sat on an eight point lead for much of the second half, out of their defensive wall which limited scoring opportunities and slowed down the pace of the game to keep the Oredockers contained.
