Bill Carnahan spent part of his career as an educator at Ashland High School, where he taught math and coached wrestling, before moving on in 1968 to coach at Northland College.

Carnahan was a terrific athlete in his own right, playing baseball, basketball, football and hockey in high school in Marshfield and then playing football for what would become the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where he he was a two-way starter as a quarterback and defensive back.
