Bayfield and Washburn teachers have returned to virtual instruction after a spike in COVID cases among Bayfield County students. Ashland schools still are using face-to-face instruction. (Contributed photo)

A “drastic surge” in the number of COVID-19 cases in Bayfield County has resulted in the Washburn School District moving to virtual-only education for elementary school students and a no-spectator policy for sporting events.

At the Bayfield School District, the school board voted to move all of the district’s mainland schools to a virtual learning format from Wednesday Jan. 12 to Wednesday, Jan 26. All district athletics for that time period have also been cancelled. The La Pointe School will remain open.
