Funny thing

Director Diane Lutz stands on the partially constructed set of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.” As the 2018 StageNorth Groundlings artist in residence, Lutz is directing the Tony award-winning Stephen Sondheim play, which will be performed Nov. 8 to 18 at StageNorth Theatre in Washburn. As Diane Lutz walks across the half-constructed set of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” she becomes increasingly animated, pointing out the shells of what will become three grand Roman homes. She chuckles while looking at the cartoonish panels created by Bayfield's Bob Holton, imagining how the cast looks while rehearsing the song “Pretty Little Picture,” poking their faces through ovals on top of painted bodies.

“This is a very, very funny show,” Lutz said.
