Polar Plungers shiver their timbers

Cold, quaking hands clutching a bouquet, birthday girl Mardea La Pointe, 14, bolts from Lake Superior followed quickly by one of her eighth-grade classmates, Jennifer Myers, 13, on Saturday at Bayfield Winter Festival’s Polar Plunge. The Bayfield middle-schoolers stood among 39 plungers raising money for a cause, in the students’ case for a no-doubt warmer trip to Valley Fair this spring. At a brisk 32 degrees, the lake’s temperature exceeded the freezing point by the skin of its chattering teeth, but it was still toastier than the day’s high of 16. Donations continue to be accepted at recreationandfitnessresources.org/bayfield-winter-festival-polar-plunge.html.
