EAU CLAIRE — The Ashland High School girls soccer team is headed to the state tournament.
The second-seeded Oredockers defeated No. 2 seed Medford 5-0 in a WIAA Division 3 sectional final Saturday afternoon to clinch the sectional title and book passage to the state tournament in Milwaukee for the first time since 2015.
Ashland led 1-0 at halftime courtesy of a long-distance strike from junior midfielder Lily Jablonski.
"We got off to a slow start," AHS head coach Jonny BeBeau said. "The field was very narrow and Medford sat back defensively. Once we started getting comfortable moving the ball around it opened up some spacing for us. We knew we needed to get one on the board and that would calm some nerves, and Lily Jablonski stepped up and hit an absolute rocket to put us on the board."
The Oredockers erupted for four more goals in the second half, with Jablonski adding her second goal of the game, and sophomore striker Alex Pieterek notching a hat trick to lock up the state berth.
"We made some adjustments at halftime and quickly got on the board and never looked back," BeBeau said. "We did what we had to do and are looking forward to preparing for the state tournament."
Ashland (21-2-1) also shined on defense as the Oredockers posted their 18th clean sheet of the season in the win.
The state tournament begins Thursday and runs through Saturday in Milwaukee.
Ashland will play the top overall seed Catholic Memorial Thursday at 11 a.m.
