You can’t always get everything you want: We’ve heard it said. Yes, choices, trade-offs, no free lunch. Economists call this “opportunity costs” and enshrines it as a first principle.

But wait, it’s not that simple. Even the textbooks recognize that if resources are unemployed, used inefficiently, or evolving technologies are not fully incorporated into production, then trade-offs need not exist.
