Book canceled

Cutline: The Book Across the Bay race, which typically draws nearly 4,000 skiers, snowshoers and hikers to a 10K trek over the ice between Ashland and Washburn, was canceled this week. It’s the latest local event to be shut down by the coronavirus pandemic. (File photo)

Skiers and snowshoers have headed out under the stars, crossing Lake Superior from Ashland to Washburn every February for the past 24 years.

The Book Across the Bay began as a fundraiser for the Washburn Public Library — hence the name and the years being counted in chapters — and has grown over the years to support dozens of local organizations.
