Indian educator of the year

Bad River tribal member Bwaakoningwiid (He Overcomes) David O’Connor, an education consultant with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, has been named Wisconsin Indian Education Association Indian Educator of the Year.

Bad River tribal member David O’Connor spends his days at the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction helping the state’s 421 school districts integrate instruction about Wisconsin tribal history and sovereignty into their coursework.

Also known by his Ojibwe name, Bwaakoningwiid, which translates to He Overcomes, O’Connor is an education consultant with the American Indian Studies Program at DPI. His job also involves assisting with the education of Native American students.
