The 80 men and women of the Ashland National Guard unit will be loading their gear and setting off Thursday for what could be a year-long deployment to the Middle East, Bay-area residents are invited to see them off.

The soldiers will be escorted down Main Street by local police and firefighters at  11:15 a.m. A previous report that the public would be able to greet the troops at the Ashland armory was incorrect. According to Staff Sgt. Tony Weber, training sergeant for the Ashland detachment, there will not be enough room at the armory for members of the public to be on hand before the unit boards buses for the first leg of its journey.
