Nine days before Christmas in 1911, a young Ashland mother asked a friend to take care of her 1-year-old daughter, then walked across town to an establishment called the Ashland Maternity Home. She didn’t dare tell her husband, but she was pregnant again, and she just wasn’t ready for another baby so soon. People were telling her that Mrs. Hess at the Maternity Home could take care of that.
