Shirley Joy Haugen passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children, on August 29, 2019 at Court Manor Care Center, Ashland.
Shirley was born June 19, 1935 to Joseph and Julia (Stone) Scholl. She grew up in the Town of Washburn, attending Washburn schools. She married her high school sweetheart, Donald Haugen, on December 27, 1952. They lived on her grandparent's homestead in the Town of Washburn for the past 65 years.
Shirley was a homemaker, and worked as a Tax Deed Lister for Bayfield County, retiring in 1997. She was elected to the Washburn School Board, was active in Northwoods Quilters, the American Cancer Society, Washburn Historical Society, ABC Thrift Store, Town Board, Northern Lights Health Care Center Board of Directors, and Northern Lights Auxiliary.
Shirley was a woman of deep faith, and an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Washburn.
Shirley's life revolved around relationships. She loved everyone, and would never say a negative word about anyone. She adored her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and loved to tell stories about recent events in their lives. Shirley lived out her middle name, "Joy," no matter the circumstances in which she found herself.
Shirley is survived by one brother, Joseph (and Dorothy) Scholl; her four children, Dee (and John) Pederson, Paul Christopher Haugen (and Michelle Bitzer), Julie (and Bill) Malinoski, and Dora Haugen; grandchildren Anna Pederson, Derek (and Taylor) Pederson, Joseph (and Lesley Burg) Haugen, David Haugen (and Elise Buchbinder), Marc (and Charlene) Malinoski, Erin Malinoski (and Michael Davis); great-grandchildren Avery, Emlynn, & Iris Pederson, Mercer Malinoski, and a new great-grandchild to be born to Joseph and Lesley; brothers-in-law Jerry and Jon; cousins; and many nieces and nephews.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; and by her husband, Donald, on March 9, 2019.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, September 8, 2019 at 12:00, noon at Messiah Lutheran Church in Washburn. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior.
