Joshua James Byrnes, 25, of Ashland passed away Saturday, September 14, 2019 at St. Mary’s Medical Center, in Duluth, MN. He was born July 25, 1994 in Ashland, the beloved son of James J. Byrnes and Debra K. (Griffith) Byrnes. He touched the lives of many people with his smile and generosity, and maintained his trademark sense of humor all the way to the end. Life will never be the same.
In 2012, he graduated from Ashland High School. Joshua was an outstanding young man, dedicated to his family, and volunteering much of his time outside of work from Little Caesars and the Ashland Daily Press, to care for and bring joy to so many.
Joshua was an avid sports fan, especially of the Green Bay Packers and the Milwaukee Bucks. He enjoyed playing the guitar, shooting guns at the family cabin, fishing, gaming, laughing, and having fun with his family and friends. He was an animal lover, and had two cats, Hunter and Panther. Joshua loved to hang with his best friend and brother, Jake – they were inseparable. He and his nephew, Alex, who was like another brother, were also so close, not just in age but in truly having fun just being together. The same with Dante. Joshua loved his big sister, Heather, whom he looked up to, and yet felt so privileged to protect. He was and always will be a guardian angel to his nieces, Keeley and Kiara. Joshua was proud to be a great-uncle and was the Godfather of his great-niece, Kamryn Rose Turgeon. He had a very special relationship with all of his aunts, uncles, and cousins. He had many friends and a special friend, Hailie Pralle. His Godparents are Janelle Kontny and Larry Kontny.
He is survived by father, James J. Byrnes, and mother, Debra K. (Griffith) Byrnes; a sister, Heather Sturgal-Hill; a brother, Jake Byrnes; a nephew, Alex (Ashley) Hill; two nieces, Keeley (Cody Turgeon) Hill, and Kiara Hill; his great-niece and Godchild, Kamryn Rose Turgeon; a great-nephew, Karson Turgeon; maternal grandmother, Doris Griffith; aunts and uncles, Janelle Kontny, Larry Kontny, Michelle and Brian Hebert, Shannon Bozenik, Jake and Tina Griffith, Shari (Rick Rieckmann) Lennon, and Wendy Griffith; brother-in-law, Chris Hill; cousins, Lacy (Mitch) Putnam, Samantha (Shannon) Kontny, Nichole (Weston) Kontny, Eric Kontny, Jeffrey Campbell, Michael Campbell, Sarah Fitzpatrick, Julia Bushma, Dante Griffith, Lauren Griffith, Camden Griffith, Rachel Rieckmann, Amanda (Greg Scotto) Rieckmann, and Lindsay (Tanner) Buchholz; and special friend uncle “Crockett” Byrnes.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Lewis (Gene) Griffith; paternal grandparents, John W. Byrnes, Audrey Erickson, and Lee Erickson; aunts, Jacalyn Byrnes and Joni Byrnes-Campbell; and a cousin, Joseph Cunningham.
