Jon A. Carlson, 76, of Ashland, passed away on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at his home. He was born on February 26, 1943 in Ashland, the son of George E. and Eileen (Bidgood) Carlson.
Jon graduated from Ashland High School in 1961, attended Marquette Dental College in Milwaukee, then he went onto the University of Wisconsin – Madison and graduated from there in 1968. He taught school in Oak Park, IL for a time, then developed Carlson Construction Maintenance, where he enjoyed the challenge of doing the job right. He “retired” to Ashland, where he continued in the home rental business.
You may have seen him driving his 1972 green Chevrolet around town. He could always fix and maintain his favorite car and he liked the spacious trunk. Jon always enjoyed planting dahlias and marigolds around the house grounds. He was a big Green Bay Packers fan, especially when they were winning. His grandparents started the Carlson Jewelry Store in Ashland in 1903 near the now Bay Theater where his father and uncle Clarence joined them.
He is survived by 2 sisters, Karen Welton – Port Washington, WI and Jue (Daniel) McDougall – Downers Grove, IL; his aunt, Phyllis Wigg – Milford, MI; nephew, Greg (Keely) Welton – Port Washington; cousins, Dick (Barb) Barry – Ashland, Kevin Carlson – Herbster, Kyle Carlson – Superior, Renata Carlson – Brisbane, Australia, Thor Carlson – Brisbane, Australia, Chris Carlson, Phillip Carlson, David Wigg, Rusty Wigg, Zack Wigg, David Wigg, Kay (John) Hudack – Menasha, WI, Chris Umberger and Phillip Carlson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Georgeann; uncles and aunts, Clarence (Lil) Carlson, Ed (Jean) Carlson, David (Ruth) Carlson – Brisbane, Australia, Carl (Bernice) Carlson, Albert Carlson, Doris (Myron) Barry and Robert (Carol) Carlson.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, October 10, 2019 at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Ashland with Pastor Rick Williams officiating. The Roberts Funeral Home in Ashland is handling he arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Chequamegon Humane Society.
