Clayton Jacob Beckman, 85, formerly of Herbster, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 6, 2019 at the Court Manor Health Services in Ashland with his family by his side. He was born on December 30, 1933 in Brule, the son of William and Ailie (Kangas) Beckman.
Clayton married Louise Erickson on October 16, 1954 in Duluth, MN and together they raised 7 children. Clayton worked for the Chrysler Corporation in Detroit for 2 years, before moving back to Herbster where he worked at Isaksson Lumber for 20 years. He then worked as a custodian/bus driver for the South Shore Schools for 12 years. Clayton was on the Clover Town Board from 1971 – 1974 and was town chairman for 10 years. He served on the Bayfield County Board for several years and was an EMT for the South Shore Ambulance, and was instrumental in obtaining their first ambulance in 1974. He was also a 50-plus-year member of the Herbster Fire Dept. and was an active member of the Herbster Community Club. Clayton was an avid outdoorsman, gardener, hunter and fisherman. He was an active member of the First Lutheran Church in Port Wing and was on the church council and helped with remodeling the kitchen.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Louise; his sons, Clayton Lee (Amy) Beckman – Chetek, Bruce Allan (Gina) Beckman – Middleton, Aaron Jacob Beckman – Minneapolis; daughters, Yvonne (Michael) Zordan – Shawano, Bonnie (Earl) Koski – Crystal Falls, MI and Valerie (Rollie) Walliin – Ashland; 9 grandchildren, Melissa (Drew) Farwell, Dixie Ellson, Shelly (Austin Corbine) Ellson, Brian Beckman, Andrew (Anna) Beckman, Eric Beckman, William Beckman, Britta (Alex) Schultz and Megan (Luke Sievers) Beckman; 4 great-grandchildren, Hailee, Allen, Nathan and Jackson James; a brother, Stanley Beckman – Duluth, MN; 2 sisters, Mavis Johnson – Superior and Faye (Vernon) Jondreau – Superior; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Rory Beckman.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 14, 2019 at the Roberts Funeral Home in Ashland with Pastor Nancy Hanson officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will take place in the Herbster Community Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Herbster Volunteer Fire Dept. or the South Shore Area Ambulance.
