Jail literacy

Ashland and Bayfield counties are trying to enrich the lives of jail inmates' kids — and hopefully help prevent inmates from returning to jail — by encouraging inmates to read with their kids via teleconference.

The program, which allows parents to read with their kids, play games, or just talk, is just over a year old and already is making a difference.
