John “Bucky” Grittner, 70, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, December 2, 2019 in Iron River, WI. Bucky was born on March 17, 1949 in Ashland, the son of John and Helen (Homstad) Grittner, Sr.
Bucky played many sports throughout his life, played them well, but baseball was his favorite; as much as he enjoyed sports, the outdoors was truly where he lived. After graduating from Ashland High School in 1967, he tried college, but always knew he wanted to serve his country. He joined the Air Force in 1969 and spent one year in Vietnam and two years stateside. As his father predicted, his military service would be a defining moment in his life. After his discharge in 1972, he joined the family logging business and established a trucking company which he ran until his retirement.
On March 17, 1999, he was united in marriage to Kay Monroe. He enjoyed showing his citified wife the beauty of nature in northern Wisconsin. He had a passion for helping small wildlife who were lucky enough to land on his front yard at the lake and he felt life was not complete without a dog by your side and raised wonderful golden retrievers throughout the years.
Bucky is survived by his wife, Kay, his sisters Donna (Neil) Schultz, Faye (Mike) Masterson, seven nieces and nephews and his lifelong friend, Ken.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
No services will be held at this time. A celebration of his life will be held next summer when his family gathers at the lake.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Mountain Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Ashland and Mellen, WI
