Joseph R. Toman, 98, of rural Ashland passed away on Saturday, July 27, 2019 at the Memorial Medical Center in Ashland, surrounded by his family. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. Joseph was born to John and Elizabeth (Budiash) Toman on March 18, 1921 at their home.
He married Evelyn R. Schreiner on December 27, 1943 and had recently celebrated their 75 years of marriage. They have 4 children, Clayton (Gail) Toman, the late Joseph A. Toman, Randolph E. Toman and his daughter, Gina M. (Greg) Alexander, all of Ashland. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, George, Mary, Leisha, Marilyn and Betsy, 4 great-grandchildren, Krisanne, Jackie, Cody and Taylor and 4 great-great-grandchildren, Daniel, Claire, Hayden and Eli.
Joseph was a hard-working man and had several jobs working as a Ford car salesman, driving truck for Roffers and driving school bus for Ondossagon School District. He also worked for the Bad River Casino and sold Electrolux vacuums for many years. He was also talented and played guitar for a polka band for at least 10 years. He was gifted in many ways and he passed that onto his four children.
Joseph served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1945-1946 in Puerto Rico. He retired to the Toman Tree Farm, planting landscape trees and selling Christmas trees to all his many friends. He loved to be outdoors fishing, hunting and working on any projects he could find. He enjoyed his family and loved being alive and enjoying life.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn R. Toman; his son, Joseph A. Toman; his parents; 5 sisters and 3 brothers.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, August 5, 2019 at the Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Ashland with Fr. Jerome D’Souza officiating. Visitation will start at 1:30 p.m. at the church on Monday. A United Chequamegon Bay Area Veterans service will be held at the church immediately following the mass.
