Arthur Henry Ode, Jr. was born November 17, 1936 and passed away May 31, 2019 in an auto accident in Monument, Colorado. Art was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He graduated from Nathan Hale High School in 1954. He served his country in the Army.

Art married Joan Wittman on January 27, 1968 in Milwaukee. They enjoyed 51 years of married bliss, raising three children and moving across the country many times for Dr. Ode's career as a renowned administrator of botanical gardens. They lived in Armonk, NY, Lincoln, NE, Wauwatosa, WI, Dayton, OH, and retired first in Bayfield, WI and recently in Weatherford, TX.

Art earned a BS in Botany from University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, an MS in Horticulture from UWM as well, and his PhD from from Nova University. He worked as an administrator for the Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory in Milwaukee, The New York Botanical Gardens in Bronx, NY, Sleepy Hollow Restorations in Tarrytown, New York, The University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Five Rivers Metroparks in Ohio, and owned a thriving horticulture consulting business in Bayfield, WI. He was an accomplished consultant, board member, and writer for many botanical and horticultural organizations, including the Arbor Day Foundation, America in Bloom, and the State Tree Board for Wisconsin. Most of all, he enjoyed designing and planting beautiful gardens for the many parts of the country in which he lived, both for his own family homes, and for neighborhoods and communities. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, hiking, and walking the beach of Lake Superior with his trusted dogs Lucky and Buddy.

His wife, Joan Ode, was killed in the same motor vehicle accident and it is of great comfort to the family that they were together as the constant companions they were, with one never having to have grieved the other. Art is survived by daughter Greta Ode, daughter Eva Ode Bridgeforth, son-in-law Douglas Bridgeforth, son Arthur (Dutch) Ode III, daughter-in-law Leslie Ode, and grandchildren Nickolas Bridgeforth, Kathryn Bridgeforth, and Allison Ode. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends.

Funeral arrangements on Tuesday, June 25 at 2:00 pm at the St. Matthias Episcopal Church, 111 E. Main St., Waukesha, WI 53186.
